Colic

Colic

What is Colic? Colic is a general term that can mean a variety of issues causing abdominal pain in your horse. If a horse is colicing they are most likely exhibiting signs of pain including laying down, rolling, heavy and increased breathing, high heart rate, looking at or kicking at their belly, going off grain/hay, and reduced manure production. The source of the colicing can be variable and treatment can range from supplementing hydration and pain medications to needing referral for abdominal surgery (and everywhere in between). Colic can be scary but is quite common and the quicker we identify it and can evaluate your horse the quicker we can do everything in our power to alleviate their pain.
